Prevention Research Center
The University of Kentucky Prevention Research Center (UK PRC), established in October 2000, is located in the Department of Internal Medicine, College of Medicine and is funded by the Prevention Research Centers Program (PRC), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The UK PRC is committed to enhancing the health and reducing the burden of cancer among residents in Appalachian Kentucky through education, research, and training.
Background
The Prevention Research Centers Program is a national network of 33 academic research centers committed to prevention research and the translation of that research into programs and policies. The centers work with members of their communities to develop and evaluate community-based interventions designed to promote health and improve disease. Linking university researchers, health agencies, community-based organizations, and national nonprofit organizations facilitates the translation of promising research findings into practical, innovative, and effective programs.
Every center conducts at least one core research project with an underserved population that has a disproportionate burden of disease and disability. Each center also collaborates with partners on special interest projects, as well as projects funded by other sources. The research of each center is guided by at least one community advisory committee which shares in setting research priorities, delivering interventions, and communicating results.
