(UK Extern Program)
Initiated by the University of Kentucky Hospital's Department of Nursing in 1978, the Summer Nurse Apprentice Program (SNAP)
is offered to senior nursing students. During the 10-week program which runs from June through August, you will have the
opportunity to experience the day-to-day activities associated with a major medical center, while being financially reimbursed.
As a senior nursing student, you will begin the process of socialization to the role of the professional nurse in a patient/family-centered
environment. You will be supervised by a qualified nurse preceptor in a specific patient care area for the duration of the
program. Patient care issues ranging from admission to discharge will be addressed in weekly focus sessions. As a member of
the health care team at the UK Hospital, you will participate in a multidisciplinary approach utilizing your skills and
learning new techniques in the practice of nursing.
In this comprehensive medical center environment, UK Hospital offers SNAP students excellent "hands-on" learning opportunities
in the following:
- Psychiatry
- Neuroscience
