Fayette County SAFE KIDS Coalition: The mission statement for the Fayette County SAFE KIDS
Coalition is working to prevent unitentional harm due to traffic injuries, fire and burns,
drowning, poisoning, choking, and falls to Lexington area children. This Coalition is part
of the National SAFE KIDS Campaign.
Long-term goals include:
- Raising the awareness among adults that injuries are the leading health threat facing children today and that they are preventable
- Building long-term grassroots coalitions to implement childhood injury prevention strategies on state and local levels nationwide
- Stimulating changes in adult and child behavior, products and the environment which will help reduce injuries
- Making childhood safety a priority on all levels of government, thereby creating increased financial support to prevention programs
- Supporting and expanding on national health promotion and disease prevention programs regarding childhood safety
- Designing injury prevention strategies for low-income families, whose children are at highest risk for injuries
Look Good...Feel Better: a free program that teaches beauty techniques to female cancer patients to help them combat the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. Programs are facilitated by volunteer cosmetologists and the participants are provided with free cosmetic kits. Offered in partnership with American Cancer Society.
I Can Cope: a free educational program for people facing cancer - either personally, or as a friend or family caregiver. This program offers help in the form of reliable information, peer support, and practical coping skills. Offered in partnership with American Cancer Society.
Prostate Screening: a free prostate cancer screening program is offered every 3 months at the Markey Cancer Center. The quarterly screening allows for over 700 men to be screened each year. This program is part of a national longitudinal study sponsored by the Prostate Cancer Education Council (PCEC).
The Injury Prevention Program is based on the National Model Think First Program sponsored by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurosurgeons. University of Kentucky Hospital offers this program to students throughout the state. Each one-hour program consists of three components:
- an introductory video overview of traumatic injuries,
- a slide presentation by a health care professional regarding neurological injuries, and
- a personal experience presentation given by a traumatically injured patient.
