The focus of acute care services is to provide care for non-critical patients experiencing a wide variety
of illnesses. Patients in acute care services are located on one of 8 inpatient units on the 8th, 7th and
5th floors. These units provide care and treatment, twenty-four hours a day throughout the year.
Patient diagnoses include: neurological disorders, patients undergoing solid organ transplants, trauma and
orthopaedic patients, respiratory isolation patients, general medicine, short stay patients, vascular and
abdominal surgery, and subjects in research studies. Care is rendered by a professional staff of Registered
Nurses working closely with the physicians to meet the needs of the patients. The RN staff is assisted in
patient care by Nursing Care Technicians. Families of the patients are considered integral participants in
the patient’s care.
Nursing care is based upon evidence based practice. Acute Care Services has an evidence based practice group
composed of RN staff that looks at nursing practice issues, and a nursing council composed of nursing staff
that looks at improving systems issues and processes. As part of our Magnet charge, nursing staff are also
involved in self scheduling and in Nursing Services committees to assist in directing patient care decisions.
