 Learning Objectives: Participants will…

  • Comprehend the scope and need for fiscal compliance in reimbursement and billing in clinical trials.

  • Recognize potential non-compliance issues pertinent in conducting clinical trials.

  • Understand general Medicare coverage and billing principles.

  • Be aware of special coverage principles and practices for medical devices in clinical trials

  • Identify the components of the Medicare National Coverage Decision (NCD) for clinical trials.

  • Gain a working knowledge of how to apply the NCD to clinical trials in order to designate and direct costs to the appropriate payor.

Mark Barnes, JD

Ropes & Gray LLP

Mark Barnes serves as a member of the HHS Secretary's Advisory Committee for Human Research Protections and is a partner at the law firm Ropes & Gray. He has practiced and taught law and has administered government programs in the healthcare field for the past 20 years. Mark is recognized as one of the top lawyers in the field of research compliance and medical privacy, and was named one of the "New York Area's Best Lawyers" in the upcoming 2006 edition of The Best Lawyers in America. Mark represents hospitals, medical schools, physicians, social service agencies and related organizations in regulatory, reimbursement, research, HIPAA compliance and litigation matters.
