Research Interests

Dr. Liu’s laboratory is focused on understanding the cause and consequence of mitochondrial dysfunction in stress, aging, neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson’s disease and age-associated macular degeneration) and metabolic syndrome (diabetes and obesity), By investigating the dynamic metabolism of mitochondria and phase 2 detoxifying enzyme systems, Dr. Liu is characterizing endogenous and environmental mitochondrial toxicants and also mitochondrial targeting protective nutrients and drugs. The long term goals are to provide a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of aging and age-related diseases and propose intervention strategies for preventing and treating mitochondrial dysfunction-related diseases.
