Graduate Center for ToxicologyWelcome to the Web site for the Graduate Center for Toxicology (GCT) at the University of Kentucky. The GCT, established as a degree-granting program in 1969, has graduated approximately 140 students with a Ph.D. in Toxicology who have gone on to productive careers in academia, government and industry. The Ph.D. program in Toxicology ranked in the top quartile in the National Research Council survey of doctoral programs in Toxicology and is also supported by an Environmental Toxicology Training Grant funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). The following pages describe the research, teaching and training programs of the GCT. Highlights:Congratulations to Hedy Chawsheen and Murli Mishra for passing their qualifying exams! Congratulations to Wei Zhang (GCT student) – Wei has been awarded a predoctoral fellowship from American Heart Association 07/01/13 – 6/30/14. Her project title is: The Role of Mrp1 in Protecting against Doxorubicin - induced Cardiotoxicity. Congratulations to Dr. Janice Ortega, who won The Best Poster Award for her presentation entitled “PCNA tyrosine phosphorylation by EGFR promotes genome instability” at the 2013 ASBMB Annual Meeting held in Boston, April 19-22. The award, selected by the theme organizers of the 2013 ASBMB Annual Meeting, carries a cash prize of $250. Congratulations to Michael Petriello (GCT student) – Michael has been awarded a predoctoral fellowship from American Heart Association 07/01/13 - 07/01/15. His project title: Novel methodologies to quantify anti-inflammatory nitro-fatty acids. Dr. Daret St. Clair, a Toxicology faculty member, and her vision for My Kentucky (YouTube Link).
Drs. Guo-min Li and Liya Gu, faculty in the Graduate Center for Toxicology, recently published their novel discovery in Cell demonstrating that abnormal histone protein modification by SETD2 impairs the recruitment of the DNA mismatch repair machinery to chromatin, thus leading to errors in the DNA sequence that can lead to cancer. Former student Dr. Kelley Kiningham was awarded the 2013-14 Presidential Faculty Achievement Award at Belmont University. Read More! Congratulations to Cassie Reiling, Tripti Bhattarai and Lu Miao on winning all of the prizes for graduate students at the Markey Cancer Research Day! I was proud of the number of Toxicology students who presented, and of course for the winners! And then, as the icing on the cake, Guogen Mao won one of the post-doc prizes!
