About the Conference
The 6th Conference on Molecular Mechanisms of Metal Toxicity and Carcinogenesis” will be held November 14-17, 2010 at Hilton Hotel downtown, Lexington, Kentucky. The Conference is sponsored by Markey Cancer Center and the Graduate Center for Toxicology, University of Kentucky, and the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences. The interdisciplinary scientific Conference is an international workshop that brings together a community of scientists in the area of metal toxicity and carcinogenicity. The focus will be mechanisms of metal-induced toxicity, strategies for intervention and prevention strategies, and possible translation from basic studies into clinical or public policy. The objective of Conference ate to coordinate, exchange, and disseminate information and to explore metal-induced toxicity and carcinogenicity.

This Conference on molecular mechanisms of metal toxicity and carcinogenicity is the 6th in a series of Conferences. The scientific programs have consistently selected a broad coverage of the latest advance in the area of molecular mechanisms of metal toxicity and carcinogenicity.  These previous Conferences are listed below:

  • The first Conference: Morgantown, West Virginia, September 10-12, 2000, sponsored by CDC/NIOSH and OSHA. Organizer: Xianglin Shi, Research chemist and Team Leader, Pathology and Physiology, Health Effects Laboratory Division, NIOSH/CDC. The Conference proceedings were published in a Focused Issue of Focused Issue of Molecular Mechanisms of Metal Toxicity and Carcinogenesis, Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, volume 222, issues 1-2, 2001. Guest editor, Xianglin Shi
  • The second Conference: Morgantown, West Virginia, September 8-11, 2002, sponsored by CDC/NIOSH. Xianglin Shi, Research chemist and Team Leader, Pathology and Physiology, Health Effects Laboratory Division, NIOSH/CDC. The Conference proceedings were published in a Focused Issue of Focused Issue of Molecular Mechanisms of Metal Toxicity and Carcinogenesis, Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, volume 255, issues 1-2, 2004. Guest editor, Xianglin Shi
  • The third Conference: Morgantown, West Virginia, September 12-15, 2004, sponsored by CDC/NIOSH. Xianglin Shi, Research chemist and Team Leader, Pathology and Physiology, Health Effects Laboratory Division, NIOSH/CDC. The Conference proceedings were published in a Focused Issue of Focused Issue of Molecular Mechanisms of Metal Toxicity and Carcinogenesis, Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, volume 279, issues 1-2, 2005. Guest editor, Xianglin Shi
  • The 4th Conference: Morgantown, West Virginia, September 24-27, 2006, sponsored by CDC/NIOSH. Xianglin Shi, Research chemist and Team Leader, Pathology and Physiology, Health Effects Laboratory Division, NIOSH/CDC. The Conference did not publish proceedings and only Conference abstracts was published.
  • The 5th Conference: Morgantown, West Virginia, September 14-17, 2008, sponsored by CDC/NIOSH. Xianglin Shi, Research chemist and Team Leader, Pathology and Physiology, Health Effects Laboratory Division, NIOSH/CDC. The Conference did not publish proceedings and only Conference abstracts was published.

All above 5 Conference was sponsored by CDC/NIOSH with only first one by CDC/NIOSH and OSHA. We propose to continue this series of Conference. Diseases caused by occupational and environmental exposure to metals are one of the major public health concerns.  The underlying molecular mechanisms of metal toxicity and carcinogenicity are largely unknown. The Conference will stimulate interactions of scientists and collaborations and help move the field forward.  The conference content will challenge and seek to shift current research paradigms, or employ novel approaches or methods to fulfill its purpose.  The conference will cover concepts, approaches or methodologies, instrumentation, or interventions novel to the field of metal toxicity and carcinogenicity as well as in a broad sense. The conference will also address a refinement, improvement, or new application of theoretical concepts, approaches or methodologies, instrumentation, or interventions.

Dissemination of the results from the conference
An abstract Book of all oral presentations and posters will be distributed during the registration at the Conference.  Abstracts will be posted on the Conference website after the conclusion of the Conference.

Conference location and facilities
The 6th Conference on Molecular Mechanisms of Metal Toxicity and Carcinogenesis” will be held November 14-17, 2010 at Hilton Hotel downtown, Lexington, Kentucky. The hotel has Conference rooms and facilities and frequently holds Conference of similar sizes. The hotel is located approximately 15 minutes from Lexington Blue Grass Airport. The airport has 99 daily flights to many major cities.  While we encourage participatants to stay in the Conference hotel at the Conference rate ($99/night), there are a number of alternative choices of hotels in the area that may offer a similar rate.  There is an array of restaurants from which to choose, nearby and within walking distance.

Call for Abstracts

  1. The organizer of the Conference invites all interested individuals to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations.  All abstracts must be accompanied by a completed Registration Form.
  2. The abstract should be less than one page in length and single-spaced.  Each abstract must include: title, full name of each author (presenter(s) name should be underlined), and each author(s) institutional affiliation. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is November 1, 2010.
