The Thoracic Surgery Residency Training Program at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center (UKMC) and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) is a two-year program and accepts two applicants each year. Patients are seen both at the UKMC and at the VAMC. The VAMC is a fully integrated Dean’s Committee Hospital that is physically contiguous with the UKMC and can be accessed from most locations within the UKMC in less than five minutes.

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is actively involved in all areas of academic practice, including clinical care, education and research. Specific clinical programs have been developed and are ongoing in major aortic surgery, homograft valve replacements, mitral valve repair techniques, intraoperative echocardiography, complex pediatric cardiac surgery, cardiac assist devices and heart transplantation. The Division is also expanding its general thoracic programs in neoplastic and inflammatory pulmonary diseases, esophageal disorders, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, and lung transplantation.
