THE PAUL A. KEARNEY MD ENDOWED CHAIR IN TRAUMA SURGERY

Dr. Paul Kearney

A new endowed chair has been established in the Surgery Department. The Paul A. Kearney MD Endowed Chair in Trauma Surgery became official on October 28, 2008. The primary donor is the HGG Family Foundation which has pledged $1,000,000, to be given to the University of Kentucky in five increments between 2009 and 2013.

The principal of the fund will be administered and invested by the University and income may be used annually to support the chair in an amount determined by the Dean of the College of Medicine. The income may also serve as a funding source either for research or to enhance services of the trauma and critical care unit. In addition, this endowment may be used as a resource for recruiting and/or retaining leading surgeons in trauma surgery at UK. The total return of the fund’s investments will be distributed in accordance with the endowment spending policy that is approved annually by the Board of Trustees of the University.

The Kentucky state legislature may approve an additional allocation of funds to match the HGG Family Foundation gift. Such funds will come from the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s Research Challenge Trust Fund. The HGG Family Foundation is a private non-profit organization funded by Greg Goodman who is a personal friend and very grateful patient of Dr. Kearney.

“It’s going to help trauma program research, salaries, recruiting, equipment,” said Dr. Kearney. “It’s all good!”
