To broaden their understanding of the role of surgical management in various disease processes, general surgery residents rotate on surgical subspecialty services during the junior years including pediatric surgery, transplantation, cardiothoracic surgery, orthopaedic surgery, urology, plastic surgery etc. Senior residents rotating on the pediatric surgery and the cardiothoracic services gain a more comprehensive experience in these principal areas of general surgery.

Most of the training is done at the UK Chandler Medical Center, the parent institution for the General Surgery residency program, which is connected to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center by a tunnel.  The VA Medical Center is also closely integrated with the training program; the general surgery faculty also serve as the VA faculty. Combined University and VA teaching conferences are held. Residents rotate at the VA Medical Center during their PG-1, PG-3, and PG-5 years. During PGY-1, PGY-2, and PGY-4, general surgery residents rotate at the affiliated community hospitals: St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington and the St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead. These rotations allow the resident to participate in a large volume of operative procedures while gaining a perspective on general surgery in urban and rural community settings. Volunteer surgical staff are active in resident education during these rotations.
