One of the strategic goals of the Department of Surgery is to develop "one of the best residency training programs in the United States." This is a lofty goal but one that we believe is attainable.
The Division of General Surgery is committed to educating superior clinical and academic surgeons. To achieve this goal, the general surgery residency program is structured to provide the opportunity for well-qualified and highly motivated individuals to participate in the care of a variety of patient problems and in scholarly activities. The residency program is fully accredited by the Surgery Residency Review Committee and graduates five chief residents each year. Five PGY-1 residents are accepted into the categorical general surgery program each year, providing a non-pyramidal structure to the program. Residents achieve clinical proficiency through graduated responsibility commensurate with their ability and level of training during five years of clinical experience. Graduates of the program consistently perform well on the American Board of Surgery’s Qualifying and Certification examinations. The division has embarked on a number of innovative educational programs to deliver an established curriculum (developed by residents and faculty) to the residents. Resident participation in research, either clinical or basic science, is encouraged. An orientation to the clinical skills needed to perform basic preoperative and postoperative surgical care is conducted for incoming interns.
To enhance clinical and academic excellence, the Division of General
Surgery is composed of four sections:
The faculty members within each section have particular interests and expertise, allowing residents to obtain in-depth training.
General surgery residents are encouraged to pursue academic interests and contribute to the surgical literature during their training. The opportunity to perform basic research is available to residents for one or two years after the third year of clinical training and is encouraged for those residents wishing to pursue academic surgical careers. This research experience may be obtained in one of the many funded laboratories at the university or at another facility.
The resident in general surgery is expected to maintain the highest level of quality patient care, professional demeanor, and personal integrity. The resident is expected to be both a student and a teacher: a student of the art and science of surgery and a teacher of fellow residents, colleagues, medical students, and nurses.
