GASTROINTESTINAL SURGERY

The Section of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) utilizes laparoscopic and endoscopic techniques for the care and treatment of patients with a wide array of surgical diseases involving the pancreas, hepatobiliary system, GI tract, and intra-abdominal solid organs. A major emphasis is the performance of basic and advanced laparoscopic procedures, including cholecystectomy, common bile duct exploration, fundoplication, hernia repair, bowel resection, adrenalectomy, splenectomy, pancreatectomy, and others. The endoscopy experience garnered by residents is within the top 10 percent of that in the nation for surgery residents. Residents typically rotate on the MIS service during  PGY-1, PGY-3, and PGY-4 or PGY-5. The MIS section is involved in research, including outcomes evaluation with MIS techniques and application of new technology. The MIS section has developed innovative educational programs which combine training models, animal labs, and a graduated curriculum.
