GENERAL SURGERY SECTIONS
Gastrointestinal Surgery Surgical Oncology Trauma & Critical Care Vascular Surgery

General Surgery continues to thrive under the leadership of Patrick C. McGrath, M. D. Seven new faculty members have been recruited during the last 24 months, two colorectal, two vascular, one surgical oncologist, and two trauma surgeons. The Patrick Hagihara Chair of Surgery endowment was funded this year; increasing the number of endowments to seven.

UK Healthcare is expanding; the recent purchase of Good Samaritan Hospital is enabling the division to grow at an even more rapid rate. The division anticipates continued growth as the UK Healthcare expands its coverage area across the region.

The residency program, under the leadership of Eric D. Endean, M. D. continues to recruit and educate qualified and motivated residents and fellows. The highly sought after General Surgery residency program typically receives over 450 applications to fill five categorical and five non-designated preliminary positions.

The Division is engaged in both clinical and basic science research. The General Surgery Clinical Research Program is a comprehensive program supporting all aspects of clinical research. The basic science research program has a well-equipped and staffed cellular and molecular laboratory with powerful collaborations and related core facilities.

The Division oversees the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery laboratory, a state-of-the art facility that provides trainings to residents across the college of medicine, the physicians’ assistants program and to the nursing school.
