Resident Teaching Awards

At the close of each academic year, medical students cast votes for residents who exhibit excellence in surgery teaching and instructing. This year, 18 residents were awarded with plaque and a hearty congratulations.

Gabe Bietz receives plaque from Zwisch with Dr. Iocono looking on. Students said he was, "Very enthusiastic about surgery and teaching. Showed great interest in student and took all available opportunities to teach."

William Cavatassi shakes hands with Zwisch. Students said, "Respectful and considerate. Treated students as integral part of team. Outstanding. Actively taught students, gave students great opportunities to get involved."

Christopher Culpepper receives plaque. Praises inclulde, "Explains complicated things in simple manner. Great teacher. Fun to be around."

Garrett Korrect receives plaque from Zwisch.

Cortney Lee is humbled by the comments. "Dr. Lee is a great teacher and physician. She is a role model for female surgeons. Very helpful feedback…clear expectations. She wanted us to succeed and take on more responsibility to learn. Impressive. Always willing to take time to teach and explain concepts. She is clear and knows a lot about her job. Took time to instruct in the OR. Lays a foundation by teaching underlying principles and not just facts. Very interested in our learning and took every opportunity to keep us involved. Wealth of knowledge. Encouraged student leadership development. Excellent teacher. Very good about engaging and questioning med students."

Comments on Anthony Schlake include: "Excellent teacher. I was very impressed with his knowledge & ability to verbally convey it. I asked tons of questions & he was always more than happy to answer them. He encouraged my interest in urology and even gave me a Urology pocket text that I used extensively on the rotation."

Robert Thompson was praised, "Good knowledge base. Good interaction with students. Was great at teaching suturing on the side. Always tried to quiz over consults taken in the afternoon."

Roland Weast had the most comments, "Very approachable. He was a very good teacher in the OR setting, in clinic & on rounds. Great at describing what he is doing in the OR and why. Always willing to explain treatment plan if you do not understand. Very knowledgeable. Dr. Weast is an outstanding teacher. I consider myself blessed to have been able to work with him for 3 weeks b/c I learned so much from him. He is also an excellent physician role model. He was extremely patient with us and was always more than happy to answer any question I had – no matter how big or little. I know Dr. Weast has no interest in academia but I do hope he finds a way to incorporate teaching in his future work so that future students can benefit from working with him. Spent the time with me to discuss any questions I had. Super teacher. Spent time with students, answered and asked questions, actively taught students in and out of the OR."

Patrick Wilson was, "Friendly and very helpful. I enjoyed working with him."
