The thoracic surgery residents rotate each year between two services: 1) the  General Thoracic Surgery Service and 2) the Cardiac Surgery Service, which includes both adult and congenital surgery. While on these services, thoracic surgery residents are involved in all of the daily clinical and educational aspects of the service. The resident accompanies faculty on patient rounds, assists on and performs operations, participates in the pre- and post-operative care of patients, and attends conferences. A residents' education conference is also held each week.

During the first year, the resident on the general thoracic surgery rotation has a one-month other program assignment in Surgical Endoscopy that provides experience in esophagoscopies. Also in the first year general thoracic rotation, a one to three month on-call assignment  (depending on activity) in Pediatric Surgery provides training in esophageal procedures and other pediatric procedures not performed in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Division.

During the first year cardiac service rotation, thoracic surgery residents gain exposure to pacemaker implants and closed electrophysiology interventions via a one-month other program assignment in Electrophysiology/Cardiology.
