From 1997 through 2009, the Commonwealth Center of Excellence in Stroke presented a monthly Neurology/Neurosurgery Stroke Conference, attended by Neurology and Neurosurgery faculty and housestaff and third-year medical students rotating on the Neurology clinical services. This conference was sponsored jointly by the Department of Neurology, the Division of Neurosurgery in the Department of Surgery, and the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging with educational grants provided by Sanofi and Bristol-Myers Squibb. It was unique in that it provided the only recurring opportunity for structured interaction between faculty, housestaff, and students associated with these three units. Each conference involved presentation of one or more patient cases illustrating clinical aspects of cerebrovascular disease and includes open discussion, review of radiologic studies, distribution of a reference list, and commentary from participants. In 2010, the Stroke Conference was transformed into a distance learning resource under the aegis of the Department of Neurology and Kentucky Telecare. The Stroke Conference is held every third Friday at 8:00 a.m. in Suite K-128, Wing D, Kentucky Clinic.
