Center for Biomedical Engineering

Center for Biomedical Engineering conducts multidisciplinary research, education
and service programs in biomedical engineering.
Projects focus on issues such as rehabilitation and sports medicine for
the recreational and competitive athlete, orthopedic and dental biomaterials,
heart arrhythmias, stimulation and growth of nerves and tissues with
electromagnetic fields, lung function, and restoring motor function for
individuals with neurological disorders and spinal cord injuries.
General Clinical Research Center

The General Clinical Research Center provides investigators with the
infrastructure and personnel support to manage and perform clinical research
efficiently. The facilities,
located in the UK Hospital and supported by a grant from the National Institutes
of Health, includes seven beds, an outpatient clinic, specimen-processing
laboratory, metabolic dietary kitchen, and state-of-the-art body composition
equipment.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery provides excellent service and care
for patients with access to the latest in minimally invasive therapy across the
spectrum – vascular surgery, transplants, neurosurgery, plastic surgery,
urology, obstetrics and gynecology, cardiothoracic surgery, and general and
pediatric surgery.
Faculty and staff at the Center also train students and practicing
surgeons and advance minimally invasive surgery through the application of new
and innovative technologies.

for Pharmaceutical Science & Technology

Center for Pharmaceutical Science and Technology is a fully integrated
analytical and formulation development and FDA-approved pharmaceutical
manufacturing facility utilizing current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs).
The CPST has the capacity to develop and manufacture both solid dosage forms and
aseptic injectable formulations and has completed more than 150 projects/grants
with academic institutions, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, and the
National Institutes of Health.

mission of the Center for Excellence in Rural Health is to improve the health of
rural Kentuckians and strengthen rural communities by making health professions
education available to rural, place-committed people; collaborating with rural
communities and other stakeholders to develop more effective approaches to
health service delivery; collecting, analyzing and disseminating information
regarding rural health and health resources; and, conducting and publishing
applied and evaluation research relating to our health professions educational
programs, rural health policy, community development, and, distance learning.
Center for Sensor Technology

Research at the Center for Sensor Technology is
focused on the development and use of state-of-the-art sensor techniques and
equipment, such as novel microelectrodes, for studies of brain function.
The microelectrodes can be implanted in various regions of the brain to monitor
and measure small amounts of chemicals, such as dopamine, norepinephrine,
serotonin, glutamate, acetylcholine, GABA and nitric oxide.
This research has implications for a variety of neurological disorders,
such as Parkinson’s disease. The
technologies being developed at the Center also have been used for research
studies of schizophrenia, aging, aggression, drugs of abuse, and the senses of
smell and taste.

The multidisciplinary Kentucky Center for
Structural Biology is based in the Department of Biochemistry at the UK College
of Medicine. The mission of the Center is to study the structure and
interactions of biologically important macromolecules using a variety of methods
including X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, computation and modern
molecular biology.

environmental problems and with the effects of toxic substances on people. The Center also leads the Superfund Basic Research Program at
UK, which investigates the mechanisms of the adverse health effects of PCBs and

The Metabolic Research Group conducts clinical research on novel ways to

treatment approaches for obesity, and the role of antioxidants in

disorders, and nutrition. In addition to the research activities,
investigators are involved with on-site endocrine, obesity, and lipid clinics
