Residency Program

Thanks for your interest in the University of Kentucky! Our Diagnostic Radiology Residency Training Program is fully accredited by the ACGME for 24 residents, and we will be offering six PGY 2 positions starting July 2015 in the 2014 match.

This is a very exciting time at the University of Kentucky. As you will see if you browse around the UK HealthCare webpages, UK is in the midst of a massive expansion, including an entirely new main hospital building. Our department is also rapidly expanding.  Just in the last three years, UK Radiology has replaced our old PACS system with the best new system on the market, purchased new image processing work stations, and opened a new on-site imaging facility with state-of-the-art MRI and CT, which complements the recent upgrades or replacements of our existing MRI and CT scanners.  The opening of our new emergency department has been coupled with the creation of a new division of emergency radiology.  Of course, we are also expanding the size of our faculty to match our growing patient volume. We have recently expanded from fewer than 20 faculty to more than 30, and we are still recruiting with a target faculty size of around 40 for 2011. When you interview with us for your residency, you can be sure that everything you see will be bigger and better by the time you complete your residency.

Many improvements have also been made in the residency program.  We have doubled the number of didactic lectures and conferences that we give, and expanded the scope of these conferences to include section-specific journal clubs and M&M conferences, discussion panels, expert lectures from outside the department, etc.  The curriculum has already been restructured to match the schedule and structure of the new board exam.  We have remodeled the resident library and upgraded all its resources.  The resident lecture room is being remodeled as well.  We have changed our call system from a traditional model to a night-float model, and provided more dedicated research time to the residents.  Residents will have the opportunity to learn how to give effective lectures and talks by working with faculty mentors.

We also offer fellowships in musculoskeletal radiology and emergency radiology.

We are an excellent program for medical students who wish to keep all options open for their future career path. As a university-based program, we offer opportunities for research and an academic career path, and many of our residents have gone on to do top fellowships and to have successful careers in academics. Unlike some university programs, however, we offer superb hands-on diagnostic and interventional training, and many of our residents have joined private practices without doing fellowships, fully competent and confident after their training with us. So, if you do not wish to commit yourself at this early stage to either a purely academic or a purely community-based residency track, you should come and take a look at the University of Kentucky, where we offer the best of both worlds.

INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS

APPOINTMENT & ELIGIBILITY:
Residents must be graduates of an LCME or AOA accredited medical school. Graduates of medical schools outside of the United States and Canada who are ECFMG certified and have full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the state of Kentucky are also eligible.  In addition, residents must complete a one-year, ACGME-approved (or equivalent) clinical internship year in internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery or surgical specialties, obstetrics & gynecology, neurology, family medicine, emergency medicine, or any combination of these specialties.  The clinical year may also comprise a transitional year accredited by the ACGME or equivalent organization. During the clinical year, elective rotations in diagnostic radiology must occur only in radiology departments with an ACGME-accredited diagnostic radiology residency program and cannot exceed two months. All residents must be eligible for Kentucky Medical Licensure. Six residents are appointed through the NRMP each year (program is accredited for 24 resident lines).

SELECTION:
Resident selection will be supervised by the Radiology Residency Program Director with consultation from the Department of Radiology Resident Selection Committee. The Program will select eligible applicants on the basis of residency-related criteria such as preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity.  The program will not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, or any other applicable legally protected status. Materials solicited for review will include a CV, common application form, medical school transcript(s), Dean’s letter, three letters of recommendation, personal statement, USMLE (or equivalent) transcripts and ECFMG certification (if applicable).  All materials are transmitted via ERAS.  Interviews are required.

HOW TO APPLY:
Candidates must apply through the Electronic Residency  Application Service (ERAS).  Contact your Dean’s Office for further information or visit the NRMP website at www.aamc.org/eras/

OTHER FREQUENTLY ASKED APPLICATION QUESTIONS:
How many letters of recommendation do you require?
We require a minimum of three letters of recommendation. However, you may transmit up to four letters.

Do you require a letter of recommendation from a radiologist or from the chair of radiology at my medical school?
No.  The best letters of recommendation are from those who know you the best.  This may be, for example, someone you did research with, or the attending on one of your third-year clinical rotations.  We would prefer that the majority of your letters be from physicians who are able to address your abilities as a practitioner of medicine.
How many positions will you be offering this year?
We will be offering six advanced positions (PGY 2) for July 2011 in this year’s match.
Do you require a preliminary year and, if so, is one offered with your program?
Yes, an accredited preliminary clinical year is required. Currently, we are not offering any categorical positions. However, the University does offer a preliminary year in General Surgery. For additional information, please refer to the Department of Surgery web site: http://www.mc.uky.edu/surgery/ . There are also several other preliminary programs available in the nearby cities of Louisville and Cincinnati.
Do you have a set cut-off score for the USMLE?
No, our program does not set a predetermined cut-off score in order to be considered for an interview. We do not use any hard cut-off criteria to filter the applications, as we prefer to consider you and your application as a whole.  A below-average Step score would not exclude the otherwise-outstanding applicant from consideration.  Please keep in mind that the application process is very competitive, however.
Are USMLE Step II scores required to obtain an interview?
No, Step II scores are not required to obtain an interview. However, we do prefer to have them available, as Step II scores are more clinically relevant.
How and when do you notify candidates of interview invitations?
In general, the majority of our interview invitations are sent via e-mail shortly after the release of the medical student performance evaluations in November.
