Residency Program
Thanks for your interest in the University of Kentucky! Our Department of Radiology residency is fully accredited by the ACGME for 24 residents, and we will be offering six PGY 2 positions starting in July 2011 in the 2010 match.
This is a very exciting time at the University of Kentucky. As you will see if you browse around the UK HealthCare webpages, UK is in the midst of a massive expansion, including an entirely new main hospital building. Just in the last year, UK Radiology has replaced our old PACS system with the best new system on the market, purchased new image processing work stations, and opened a new on-site imaging facility with state-of-the-art MRI and CT, which complements the recent upgrades or replacements of our existing MRI and CT scanners. Of course, we are also expanding the size of our faculty to match our growing patient volume. In summer and fall of 2009, we have nine new faculty radiologists starting with us, in the abdominal, cardiovascular, emergency, interventional, musculoskeletal, and pediatric sections. Faculty recruiting continues for 2010. When you interview with us for your residency, you can be sure that everything you see will be bigger and better by the time you complete your residency.
We are also pleased to announce the approval of our first radiology fellowship, in musculoskeletal radiology, and several more fellowships are expected in short order.
We are an excellent program for medical students who wish to keep all options open for their future career path. As a university-based program, we offer opportunities for research and an academic career path, and many of our residents have gone on to do top fellowships and to have successful careers in academics. Unlike some university programs, however, we offer superb hands-on diagnostic and interventional training, and many of our residents have joined private practices without doing fellowships, fully competent and confident after their training with us. So, if you do not wish to commit yourself at this early stage to either a purely academic or a purely community-based residency track, you should come and take a look at the University of Kentucky, where we offer the best of both worlds.
