The UK Lung Transplant Program was established in 1991 and has
completed nearly 300 transplants over the past two decades. The
pulmonary transplant program is broadly divided into four clinical areas
to facilitate patient care. These include interstitial lung disease and
idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, adult and pediatric cystic fibrosis,
pulmonary vascular disease and pulmonary hypertension, as well as
patients with emphysema/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
including those patients with coal miner's pneumoconiosis.
Early referral is critical for patients who may be candidates for lung
transplantation. For patients who are currently hospitalized, inpatient
consultation for transfer is encouraged to help expedite evaluation and
treatment. Patients with life limiting lung disease are ideal transplant
candidates and are encouraged to seek a transplant evaluation. The UK
Heart & Lung Transplant Program will consider patients older than 65
years of age and those on mechanical ventilation.
Our multidisciplinary team consists of cardiothoracic surgeons,
pulmonologists, pharmacists and nurses working together to determine the
appropriate treatment options for each patient. Our doctors are
available to discuss individual cases over the telephone as a resource
for referring providers. For a physician consultation, please contact
UK- MDs at 1-800-888-5533.
