Ongoing Research

The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine offers several opportunities for the people of Kentucky to participate in studies that could potentially benefit those with lung disease.

Areas of Ongoing Research Include but are not limited to:

  1. Lung Cancer Vaccine for the treatment and prevention of recurrent lung cancer in those already diagnosed with low to mid-stage lung cancer.
  2. Participating in the VENT Trial studying endobronchial lung volume reduction in Emphysema without surgery.
  3. ResMed Spirit Trial to determine if a bedside CPAP data transmitter facilitates early physician intervention and subsequent increase in compliance.
  4. Adult Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation as a salvage treatment for those with refractory hypoxemia.
  5. Surfactant-C for the treatment of aspiration pneumonia
  6. Phosphodiesterase Inhibition for the treatmentn of COPD
  7. Simulation to improve competancy in bronchoscopy
  8. Resorbable endobronchial stents for treatment of benign airways disease stenosis or tracheobronchomalacia
  9. Novel technique for percutaneous tracheostomy placement
  10. Use of Endobronchial Ultrasound for the delivery of dendritic cells into affected lymph nodes for the treatment of lung cancer
  11. Use of inhaled tiotroprium for the treatment of COPD
  12. Use of lung sounds as a predictor of airway stenosis.
