Associate Dean for Admissions & Student Affairs John S. Wiggs (1943-2007) passed away on July 31, 2007 following a strong and courageous fight with cancer. During his 35-year career at UK,

John also served most of the medical center colleges in some way, working with students. John was the heart and soul of the University of Kentucky College of Public Health and has had an indelible impact on the college, on his faculty and staff colleagues, and all of the students. He helped launch the careers of many students whose legacies reflect their dedication to their chosen profession. John’s leadership in student recruitment, particularly with regard to underrepresented students, set a standard that all UK colleges would be well-served to emulate.

It is very fitting that we honor John Wiggs through the creation of a student scholarship in his name to be awarded to a public health student, particularly underrepresented students. This helps recognize his leadership and commitment to health professions students, particularly underrepresented students and is an opportunity to honor John’s lifetime of work and commitment to students here at UK. Before John left us, he and his family blessed this endeavor and we are honored to carry out their wishes through the creation of the John Wiggs Public Health Student Endowed Scholarship Fund.

Please join us in making a donation in Dean Wiggs’ honor. Please make checks payable to the University of Kentucky (please indicate in the MEMO line “John Wiggs Scholarship Fund”). Mail checks to: UK College of Public Health, 121 Washington Avenue, Suite 103, Lexington, KY 40536-0003. For additional information on this scholarship fund please contact Brooke Noble or call (859)218-2043

Gift of Cash

An outright gift of cash is usually the simplest method of giving. It is not subject to gift or estate taxes, and you can deduct the gift to the full extent of IRS rulings.

Planned Giving

Although we welcome and encourage outright gifts, there are also other ways to support the College's programs financially, through what is known as planned giving. Gifts may be made during your lifetime and under your Will. They may consist of cash, securities, personal property or real estate. For more information contact Brooke Noble or call (859)218-2043. You may also visit the University of Kentucky Office of Development web site.

Online by Credit Card

Gifts may be made by credit card using Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express via online gift giving

Last Will and Testament

One of the easiest and most common ways for you to make a gift to the College is through a bequest. A bequest is a provision in your last will and testament naming a person or organization to receive a particular item of real or personal property, a sum of money, or a percentage of your estate. The tax laws encourage bequests; consequently, a bequest is an excellent way to support the College's programs while realizing potentially significant tax advantages.

Life Insurance

Life insurance is often the single most valuable asset in an estate. You may want to consider transferring ownership or naming the UK College of Public Health as partial or full beneficiary of your life insurance. Many friends have found this to be a practical and inexpensive way to support our programs, with no immediate out-or-pocket costs and proceeds paid free of estate and inheritance taxes.

Life Income Gifts

As contradictory as it may seem, life income gifts allow you to give and receive at the same time. Such a gift can often make it possible for you to give what you would like to give, rather than what you feel you can afford, because you actually receive income from the gift. Life income gifts include annuity trusts and unitrusts.
