Cletus Carvalho, Program Director MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL PSYCHIATRY TRAINING DIRECTOR

Welcome to Residency training at the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Kentucky and thank you for your interest! We take pride in the three programs listed below, and in the quality of our residents & faculty and are honored to have this opportunity to familiarize you with what we offer.

Education is centered around the resident’s needs wherein they master the art of providing high quality clinical care that rests on a solid foundation of academic excellence. In addition we make every effort possible to maintain a cordial, collegial and family friendly work environment within our residency programs. Our faculty continuously works to maintain that teaching takes place without allowing these basic principles to be compromised in any fashion.

Our department also has a strong commitment to education, diverse educational exposure, and broad training from psychotherapeutics to biologically-based diagnoses & psychopharmacology. Multiple training sites, intensive supervision, and innovative teaching techniques are some of the key elements that contribute to the success of our teaching programs. We also expect our residents to extensively develop their skills in educating other residents & medical students, in organizational psychiatry through involvement with local, regional and national professional organizations and in administrative psychiatry through involvement in intra- and extra-departmental activities in committees and task forces.

Our chair, Lon Hays, M.D., is a former residency training director and has a strong commitment to education and research. Under his leadership, the department has continued to add new faculty yearly and to develop new clinical programs and research activities.

Our Vice Chair for Research, Paul Glaser, MD, PhD leads research activities within the department and works closely with residents from very early on in their careers to develop and foster clinical research. Other faculty both within the Department of Psychiatry and the University of Kentucky are available to collaborate with residents on research projects.

Todd Cheever, MD has been selected Associate Residency Training Director for the General Psychiatry program. Our Residency Education Committee is an all Resident & Faculty group that meets monthly. Other committees that work extensively on improving current policies & programs and developing new ones are comprised of faculty and residents and listed below:

1. Recruitment Committee, Todd Cheever MD, Chair
2. Research Committee, Paul Glaser, MD, PhD, Chair
3. Education and Curriculum Committee, Steve Johnson LCSW, Chair
4. Clinical Operations Committee, Teresa Gevedon MD, Chair

During residency training we offer learning opportunities in inpatient, outpatient and emergency psychiatric care in many different settings. There are also highly regarded research, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), forensic, addiction and many other elective experiences available to residents.

Most of our graduates speak highly of how the program has helped prepare them to practice Psychiatry in virtually any clinical setting with relative ease. Many of them also chose to receive subspecialty (fellowship) training in reputable training programs across the country. I highly recommend Lexington as a wonderful city in which to live. It is a great place to be single or to raise a family and most residents own their own homes. The cultural, educational and recreational opportunities are outstanding and there is more to do than anyone has time to take advantage of. I invite you to take a closer look.

Cletus Carvalho, M.D.
General Psychiatry Program Director
