Benefits, Call, Etc.

Benefits and Stipends
The
University of Kentucky provides competitive benefits and stipends. The current
year information is available at http://www.mc.uky.edu/GME/STIPENDBEN.pdf.
A sample contract is also posted at that site.
Board Preparation
Preparation for the psychiatry boards is provided to all residents.
Each year, residents take the Psychiatry Residents in Training Exam (PRITE)
as preparation for written boards. Residents observe mock boards as PGY-II’s
and, beginning at the PGY-III level, residents participate in mock oral boards
with clinical faculty.
Book Money
Money is allotted for educational materials or attending conferences:
first year - $350; second year - $400; third - $450; fourth year - $500; fifth
year - $550. In addition, Child Psychiatry residents and Triple Board residents
receive a $100 allotment for purchasing toys for play therapy.
Call
Residents at the PGY-I level through PGY-III cover emergency
services while on the Emergency Psychiatry Service weeks. Call is limited, therefore,
to several 24-hour Saturday shifts and 12-hour Sunday shifts during the year.
There is no call in the fourth year.
Keeneland Horse Racing
Residents are excused from clinical duties one afternoon during
the spring to attend Keeneland. An afternoon at the historic, beautiful Keeneland
Race Course will be a memorable experience even if you do not come home a winner.
Orientation/Welcome
Many activities are planned to orient new residents and their
families. Each year the department has a reception at the training director’s
home and a family picnic. Incoming residents are well supported in the transition
to residency. All interns spend their first two months on psychiatry and only
do “shadow call” in July. In August, they begin taking back-up call
with senior resident.
Professional Development
In addition to the educational opportunities offered in the Didactics
and Grand Rounds programs, residents are provided an opportunity to attend local
or national meetings or conferences of special interest. Five days each year
are allowed for educational leave. In addition, the department encourages participation
in professional associations at the local and national level, and assists residents
in applying for national awards and honors.
Senior Banquet
In June, a four-course banquet is held at one of Lexington’s
premier country clubs to celebrate the seniors’
graduation and to recognize outstanding achievements by residents and faculty.
Sports and Cultural Events
The University of Kentucky offers a variety of leisure-time activities,
both culturally and in the area of NCAA sports events. Residents are eligible
for tickets to these events at student rates. Lexington offers an exciting array
of other cultural and entertainment opportunities such as touring Broadway shows,
ballet, opera, rock and country music concerts, art galleries and specialty
museums.
Vacation
At the PGY-I level, residents are given two weeks of vacation plus five days of educational leave to attend conferences or prepare for boards. At the PGY-II level and above, residents have three weeks of vacation plus five days of educational leave. All residents have eight University holidays off plus four holiday bonus days that can be used at other times during the year.
