What if I Decide to Take Part in PREADVISE?

Participation in PREADVISE will not affect your participation in SELECT. You will continue to take the supplements provided by SELECT. For PREADVISE you will have a 5-minute memory check every year during your yearly SELECT visit. If your memory check suggests problems, you will be offered a slightly longer memory examination.

If this longer memory check also suggests problems, you may be asked to see a doctor who specializes in memory problems to determine what is causing the changes in your memory.

You will continue to visit your SELECT Study Site every six months to pick up new bottles of supplements and to talk about your progress in both studies. Because you will be asked to stay in the studies for seven to twelve years, depending on when you join, your memory will be checked each year. It is important that you plan to complete both studies. However, if you change your mind, you may leave PREADVISE at any time. If you choose not to continue in PREADVISE, you may still continue in SELECT.

If you are male and 62 or older (or age 60 or older if of African-descent or Hispanic origin) and decide to participate in SELECT, you are eligible for PREADVISE. More than 400 clinics in the U. S., Puerto Rico, and Canada are enrolling men in SELECT and PREADVISE (at participating sites). If you are interested in participating in both studies, or want to find out more about the studies, please call the National Cancer Institute's Cancer information Service at 800-422-6237 (SELECT) or the University of Kentucky Health Connection at 800-333-8874 (PREADVISE).
