lab, has been selected for the 2010 Buck for Brains Summer Research Program.

- Drs. Karyn Esser and Ken Campbell received a new 5 year Grant in collaboration
with Dr. Tom Clemons (John Hopkins University).
- Dr. Ok-Kyong Park-Sarge will be stepping down after a four-year term as the Director of Graduate
Studies. Dr. Bret Smith will take over this position beginning July 1, 2010
- The Physiology Department will be participating in the COM 50th Celebration. Mark your calendars
now for October 15th. More details will be available soon.

Postdoctoral fellows and graduate students from the department attended the American Physiological Society Professional Skills Training Workshop in Orlando, FL.
The workshop allows students to develop scientific presentation skills, and improve writing and reviewing skills for scientific journals.

R01, titled Role of TRPV1 in Airway Hypersensitivity Induced by Allergic Inflammation
- Dr. Steve Estus
In collaboration with labs at Washington University, University of IL at Chicago,
University of S. Florida, and Georgetown University, the Estus lab was awarded a program project grant
to evaluate the role of apoE receptors in Alzheimer’s disease. This five year grant has direct costs of $1.5 million per year.
- Dr. Gary VanZant
Challenge grant titled Slit2-mediated expansion of primitive hematopoietic stem cell populations for transplantation
and hematopoietic recovery. It is the direct outgrowth of Amanda Waterstrat's Ph.D. research. Amanda obtained her
degree in January, 2009 from the Dept. of Physiology and is now Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences at Eastern
Kentucky University in Richmond.

The Physiology Department would like to welcome two new administrative staff. Cindy McKenzie is now the
Chair’s Assistant and the Administrator for the Muscle Biology Center. She comes to UK from Lexmark with over
eighteen years experience in business. Sherry Howard will be working with all things related to the Graduate
Student program. She comes to us from Lexington Christian Academy with more than fourteen years experience
in education. We are thrilled to have both Cindy and Sherry join our team!
