worked closely with Dr. Charles Walton who was a professor in the College of Pharmacy who taught pharmacology during this time period. In 1967, Dr. Parker and Dr. Walton, working with Dean Joseph Swintosky began the implementation of a clinical pharmacy practice and training program and selected several of the University Hospital staff pharmacists to enter into a three year training program that would culminate with the awarding of the Doctor of Pharmacy degree. The first two graduates of this program in 1969 were Drs. Patricia Moynahan Mullins and Jerry B. Johnson. In 1970, Dr. Rapp, along with Dr. Ann Amerson, Dr. Craig Chudzik, Dr. Wayne Conrad, and Dr. Tom Samuels, were the second graduating Pharm.D. class from the University of Kentucky. During this time period Dr. Parker along with Dr. Walton were also planning for a hospital pharmacy residency program which began in 1968. Following graduation from the Pharm.D. program, Dr. Rapp accepted a faculty position as Assistant Professor in the College of Pharmacy and during the time period 1970 – 1975 worked with other faculty and staff to establish clinical pharmacy practice and teaching programs throughout University Hospital. Dr. Rapp became the Surgery Clinical Pharmacist during this time period and worked with Drs. Ward Griffin and Dr. Brack Bivens on a variety of surgical research projects. Dr. Rapp was promoted to Associate Professor of Pharmacy in 1975 and received a joint faculty appointment as Assistant Professor of Surgery in 1981. In 1981 Dr. Rapp was promoted to Professor of Pharmacy and in 1986 to Professor of Surgery.
During his 42 years at the University of Kentucky (24 of these years working
with Dr. Parker) Dr. Rapp has published over 200 papers in the scientific
and professional literature and authored numerous book chapters. Dr. Rapp
is a founding member of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and
belongs to numerous other professional organizations. Dr. Rapp worked
closely with Dr. Parker during the 24 years Dr. Parker served as Director of
Pharmacy at the University of Kentucky hospital. He has been closely
involved with the residency training program involving the 150 residents
trained during the Parker era at the University of Kentucky, as well as
those following them. To date, Dr. Rapp has helped train over 300 pharmacy
residents at the University of Kentucky. |
