Dr. DiPiro has held leadership positions in pharmacy organizations. As a member of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists he has served on the Commission on Therapeutics, the Task Force on Science, and as Chair of the Task Force on Implementing the Science Agenda. He currently is Director-at-Large for the Section of Clinical Specialists. He is a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and serves on the ACCP Research Institute Board of Trustees. He has served as a member of the Board of Regents, member of the Board of Directors for the Journal Pharmacotherapy, and as chair or member of other committees. He has been an active member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and served on the Committee for Research Affairs and Graduate Education, and is a member of the Surgical Infection Society where he is currently serves on the Therapeutic Agents Committee. He has served as an NIH site reviewer and on an advisory committee for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Institutions.
Dr. DiPiro has published over 100 refereed papers in academic and professional journals, mainly related to issues of antibiotics, drug use in surgery, various issues in pharmacy practice, and pharmacy education. His papers have appeared in journals such as Pharmacotherapy, American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, Critical Care Medicine, Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, JAMA, American Journal of Surgery, and Annals of Surgery. He is also an editor for
Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach, now in its 5th edition and author of the book
Concepts in Clinical Pharmacokinetics. He serves on the editorial boards of Pharmacotherapy, American Surgeon, and Medscape Pharmacy.
He is also editor of The American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education

Dr. DiPiro maintains an active teaching role in pharmacy including didactic instruction in immunology, pathophysiology, pharmacotherapy, as well as serving as a clerkship preceptor. He is a member of the Graduate Faculty and serves on doctoral committees. His research interests have included treatment and prevention of surgical infections and studies of immune dysfunction associated with traumatic injury and sepsis.
