General Info about the Program

     For general information about what makes the UK program special, click here to learn about the program traditions (ropes challenge, on-call, lampoon, pig roast, Spindletop, etc.), the Hospital, the University, and about Lexington and surrounding areas.
 

 
    The specialty residency in adult internal medicine provides an in-depth experience from a variety of required rotations.  The required rotations include adult internal medicine/pharmacokinetics, infectious diseases, medical intensive care unit, cardiology, emergency department, and hematology/oncology.  Other areas for electives include renal/liver transplant, neurology, nutrition, medication use policy, psychiatry, and specialty ambulatory care.  The adult internal medicine resident is also encouraged to participate in a longitudinal clinic.  Options for these include cardiology/heart failure clinic, anticoagulation clinic, and HIV/infectious diseases clinic. 

      The primary emphasis of the adult internal medicine resident is placed upon the development of clinical practice skills and delivering patient specific pharmaceutical care in both the ambulatory and acute care setting.

     Residents develop skills in verbal and written communication, teaching, and research. The residents participate in providing 24-hour clinical pharmacy service through the in-house on-call program. For more information see Smith KM, Hecht KA, Armitstead JA, Davis GA.      The Department of Pharmacy utilizes automated drug delivery units throughout the hospital; three inpatient satellites located in the operating room, Children’s Hospital, and Markey Cancer Center; three outpatient pharmacies, and a central pharmacy area. Services are provided by 65 pharmacists, 63 technicians, 14-15 residents, and 5 managers. Residents have a four to eight hour weekly staffing commitment that is performed in central pharmacy.
space.gif (807 bytes)The adult internal medicine residency is a one-year (currently non-ASHP accredited, but seeking accreditation) specialty residency.  Eligibility requirements include a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited program, completion of a pharmacy practice residency, and Kentucky pharmacy licensure. UK PGY2 Residency Fundamentals

  • Kentucky Pharmacy Licensure is required.
  • Residents are members of medical house staff.
  • Residents participate in the in-house on-call program approximately once every two weeks.
  • Residents utilize the Resident Learning System to direct their learning.
  • Residents staff in the central pharmacy an average of 4-8 hours per week.
  • The design and completion of a resident research project is required, including a presentation and manuscript of research results.
  • Residents engage in teaching skill development, as well as provide teaching in a variety of settings, including didactics, small group facilitation, and clerkship precepting.
  • Residents have opportunities to present at local, state, national, and international meetings.
