General Info about the Program

For general information about what makes the UK program special, click here to learn about the program traditions (ropes challenge, on-call, lampoon, pig roast, spindletop, etc.), the Hospital, the University, and about Lexington and surrounding areas.

 
The specialty residency in Infectious Diseases provides an in-depth experience from a variety of required rotations including antimicrobial management, infectious diseases consults, immunology lab, microbiology lab, bone marrow transplant, and surgical critical care rotations.  Other areas for infectious diseases electives include HIV clinic, pediatric infectious diseases, solid organ transplant, and medical/pulmonary critical care rotations.  The primary emphasis of the program is to develop clinicians with expertise in the area of infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and antimicrobial stewardship.  Residents completing the program are expected to demonstrate competency in the areas of contemporary pharmacy practice, written and oral communication and infectious diseases research. Picture of Beside Monitoring of Drips The infectious diseases resident participates in clinical or bench top research activities, and the results of a research project are expected to be presented at a national meeting and in a professional manuscript.  The resident also has educational responsibilities including precepting Doctor of Pharmacy students, leading case discussion groups and giving didactic lectures for the College of Pharmacy, and providing inservices for other healthcare providers.
space.gif (807 bytes)The University of Kentucky serves as the leading tertiary care center providing services to people throughout Eastern and Central Kentucky.  The hospital has an antimicrobial management team jointly run by an infectious diseases pharmacist and physician.  It has two infectious diseases consult teams, one focusing on general infectious disease issues and HIV, and the other focusing on osteomyelitis and skin/soft tissue infections.  The Infectious Diseases division currently consists of eight attending physicians and two fellows. Picture of Critical Care Resident with a Code Cart space.gif (807 bytes)The Infectious Diseases residency is a one-year specialty residency with an ASHP accreditation application submitted.  Eligibility requirements include the Doctor of Pharmacy degree, a pharmacy practice residency or equivalent, and licensure in the state of Kentucky.

UK Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Practice Residency Fundamentals

  • Kentucky Pharmacy Licensure is required.
  • Residents are members of medical house staff.
  • Residents participate in the in-house on-call program approximately once every two weeks.
  • Residents utilize a modified Resident Learning System to direct their learning.
  • Residents staff in a satellite pharmacy an average of 4-8 hours per week.
  • The design and completion of a resident research project is required, including a presentation and manuscript of research results.
  • Residents provide didactic lectures, facilitate small group discussions, and precept clerkship students.
  • Residents are exposed to various opportunities to present at local, state, national, and international meetings.
