General Info about the Program

For general information about what makes the UK program special, click here to learn about the program traditions (ropes challenge, on-call, lampoon, pig roast, spindletop, etc.), the Hospital, the University, and about Lexington and surrounding areas.

 
The PGY2 specialty residency in critical care provides an in-depth experience in a variety of critical care areas including medicine, cardiothoracic surgery, trauma, cardiology, neurosurgery, and critical care research. Other areas for critical care electives include infectious disease, nutrition, pediatric and neonatal intensive care, bone marrow transplant, solid organ transplantation, and emergency department. The primary emphasis of the program is to develop clinicians with expertise in the care of critically ill patients. Residents completing the program are expected to demonstrate competency in the areas of contemporary pharmacy practice, written and oral communication and critical care clinical research. Picture of Beside Monitoring of Drips The critical care resident participates in critical care clinical research activities, and the results of a research project are expected to be presented at a national meeting. The resident also has opportunities for educational activities including precepting Doctor of Pharmacy students, leading case discussion groups and didactic lectures for the College of Pharmacy, and providing inservices for other healthcare providers.
space.gif (807 bytes)The University of Kentucky is a Level I Trauma Center and serves as the leading tertiary care center providing services to people throughout Eastern and Central Kentucky. The UK Hospital Aeromedical Service was initiated in 1987 and has more than 1,000 flights per year. In 1990, a six-floor Critical Care Center was opened, and presently, 24 percent of all hospital beds are dedicated to critical care patients. Picture of UK Aeromedical Services Helicopter

Eligibility requirements include the Doctor of Pharmacy degree, a pharmacy practice residency or equivalent, and licensure in the state of Kentucky.

UK Critical Care Pharmacy Practice Residency Fundamentals

  • Kentucky Pharmacy Licensure is required.
  • Residents are members of medical house staff.
  • Residents participate in the in-house on-call program approximately once every two weeks.
  • Residents utilize a modified Resident Learning System to direct their learning.
  • Residents staff in the critical care satellite pharmacy an average of 4-8 hours per week.
  • The design and completion of a resident research project is required, including a presentation and manuscript of research results.
  • Residents are provided multiple opportunities to teach, including didactics, small group facilitation, and clerkship precepting.
  • Residents are exposed to various opportunities to present at local, state, national, and international meetings.
