Chris Harlow
I chose UK because it is close to home and I wanted to receive the best pharmacy education possible. After researching and visiting several schools, I found that UK is one of the most reputable and distinguished pharmacy schools!
I was afraid when I entered pharmacy school that the large class size (132 students) would be a difficult learning environment. On the contrary, having such a large class has enabled me and many other students to have more people to turn to for help. All the students are very bright and professional. I feel that our class is more than just a bunch of pharmacy students, but instead, a large family where we all stick together and learn together.
On Becoming Involved
I have been very surprised about all the opportunities for leadership, involvement in organizations and professional development.
My first semester, I participated in College of Pharmacy Open House events which made me really appreciate how hard I had to work to get where I am today! I also joined the Diabetes Committee during my first semester which provided me with a great opportunity to gain knowledge beyond the classroom in a hands-on setting. Fall semester, I participated in the Immunization Clinic and also made and sold red ribbons during AIDS Awareness Month.
On working in a pharmacy
I began working at Walgreens in 2002 and am still working there (part-time)! I also worked in the University of Louisville’s Genetic and Molecular Research Lab. It was my first experience in a research lab, and it allowed me to explore a different, more practical, side of science. I am glad that I had the opportunity for a summer research program because it gave me insight into a field that I was very unfamiliar with.
What’s the one thing you wish you had known in high school?
I didn’t take high school as seriously as I should have. I wish I had studied a lot harder, so I would not have been learning a lot of the material for the first time in college. I worked very hard in college -- much harder than would have been required if I had studied more in high school.
What’s the one thing you wish you had known in undergrad?
I wish I had given myself more time for volunteer work and extra-curricular activities. Although I had to work and support myself through college, I should have worked harder at managing my time to take advantage of the opportunities available to students.
What do you love most about UK?
UK has opened many doors for me, even as a first year pharmacy student. I also love that the faculty at UK are very well qualified, trained, and readily available.
Chris’s advice
Explore as many options as necessary before making a decision about what you want to do for the rest of your life. Right out of high school, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, so I took some time off from college to save money and explore possibilities. I happened to start working at Walgreens and loved it. I never felt more comfortable about any decision I have made than choosing to become a pharmacist. I hope that when you apply for any program you can feel that same way. This is your decision and your life. Choose wisely.
I would also advise students to find a mentor. I feel it’s important to surround yourself at all times with people who can provide a positive influence and give direction in achieving career goals.
Plans following graduation
I haven’t chosen a specific career path for myself yet. I enjoy direct patient counseling and collaborating with healthcare professionals, so no matter what field of pharmacy I choose I know I will be happy.
