In selecting a pharmacy school, one of the most influential factors for me was the affiliation with a medical center. Unlike many other programs, the University of Kentucky’s program is affiliated with a medical center. I desired that affiliation because it most closely resembles the type of practice setting I would like to be a part of. In pharmacy, although there are a variety of practice settings, being a part of the medical team is a primary aspect of the pharmacist’s occupation.

Why Pharmacy?

The 9th Biennial Symposium on the Medically Underserved, Minorities, and Cancer greatly influenced my education and pursuit of pharmacy. After being informed about the inequalities in healthcare, I was astonished at the vast disparities experienced in medicine. This experienced propelled me to make a difference in the healthcare field. Pharmacy, in particular, interested me because of the opportunity to aid in the prevention of disease, instead of solely disease treatment.

On gaining experience in pharmacy

Prior to coming to pharmacy school, I did not work in a pharmacy. However, I would recommend students obtain prior experience whether it is a volunteer experience or a work experience.

As an undergraduate student, I engaged in two summer internships with Baylor College of Medicine where I participated in genetic research. In regards to pharmacy experience, I had an opportunity to shadow a pharmacist in an independent community pharmacy practice setting.

What's the one thing you wish you had known in high school?

The one thing I wish I had known in high school was my future profession. While in high school, I had no idea I would become interested in pharmacy. My desire to become a pharmacist began while I was working on my Bachelors degree.

What's the one thing you wish you had known in undergrad?

In undergrad, I wish I had known more about networking.

What has been the most surprising thing about pharmacy school?

The most surprising thing about pharmacy school was the amount of exams that I had to take during blocks. Never before had I experienced block exams and due to lack of experience I was initially marveled by the idea but, once the year has progressed I have begun to like the idea.

What do you love most about UK?

The faculty and staff at UK are by for the most warm-hearted, caring, and encouraging. Their kindliness makes me feel welcome and comfortable while I am away from my family.

Jazmine’s advice

For the prospective students, I would like to advise you to keep you grades up and to focus on your goals. One of the most harmful things in pharmacy school and in life is distractions. Thus, I would advise everyone to stay very focused and to avoid distractions. Although deferred gratification may be challenging, it will pay off in the end.

Plans following graduation

With the dynamic field of pharmacy ahead of me, I marvel at the opportunities and would like to learn more about various practice settings. Currently, I am unsure about which career path I would like to pursue upon graduation.
