  • PharmacistCARE is an award-winning medication therapy management service administered by clinical pharmacists and faculty at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy.
  • In addition to MTMS, diabetes and cardiovascular education and management programs are provided.
  • It is a part of UK HealthCare and located in room K135 in Wing D of Kentucky Clinic.
  • The resident is located at the K135 location and will provide services in collaboration with Kentucky Clinic Pharmacy at Kentucky Clinic.
  • Experiences the resident will gain include provision of MTMS and disease management & education programs, teaching pharmacy students, patients, and other health care professionals, developing new patient care services at PharmacistCARE and Kentucky Clinic Pharmacy, and providing medications to patients at Kentucky Clinic Pharmacy.
  • PharmacistCARE is the recipient of the 2005 APhA Pinnacle Award and the 2004 KPhA Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award.

Kentucky Clinic Pharmacy

  • Kentucky Clinic Pharmacy is the outpatient pharmacy for University of Kentucky Hospital and serves both patients of the hospital and of the Kentucky Clinic and the student population using the University Health Service.
  • The pharmacy fills an average of 17,000 prescriptions monthly with an additional 2700 monthly at the University Health Service Satellite pharmacy during the academic school year.
  • The resident will gain experience in provision of Kentucky Clinic Pharmacy medications for both acute care and maintenance medications as is typical to any other retail pharmacy. Additionally, there is a large population of solid organ transplant patients, cancer patients, neonates, and other areas of specialty that require the provision of unique pharmacy services.
  • Kentucky Clinic Pharmacy provides an extensive array of specialty injectable medications, vaccines, chemotherapy agents, and compounding services allowing the resident to gain proficiency in providing counseling and patient education in these areas as well as development of a flu vaccine administration program.
  • Serving as the contract pharmacy for the Kentucky Aids Drug Assistance Program the resident will have significant opportunity for provision of services to the HIV population.
  • The practice setting requires participation with a diverse set of payers including commercial, governmental and indigent support programs. The resident will be involved in development of MTM for Medicare Part D as well as establishing patient assistance program resources.
  • The resident will work cooperatively with PharmacistCARE and Kentucky Clinic Pharmacy to identify patients and develop programs to improve patient outcomes.
  • The preceptor at this site, Lucy Wells, RPh, has over 25 years of community pharmacy experience. Ms. Wells' practice areas include outpatient pharmacy services, third party reimbursement, Medicare/DME policy, medication errors, patient education and counseling, continuous quality improvement, drug policy development, personnel management, pharmacy staff training and development. Her area of responsibility within UK Hospital is the oversight of all aspects of the operation of Kentucky Clinic Pharmacy.
