Many changes are
happening at the College and within the Department. We are entering the
final stages of design for our new building and a groundbreaking ceremony
will be April 13, the week prior to our postgraduate conference.
Another exciting
development is the announcement of the transition of the Center for
Pharmaceutical Science & Technology (CPST) to a private business. The
idea, according to Len Heller,
UK’s
Vice President for Commercialization and Economic Development, is to create
a more flexible and competitive business named Coldstream
Laboratories. However, the company will maintain close ties to the College of Pharmacy’s education and
research mission. Mike Jay has done an outstanding job leading the
CPST for the past nine years and has decided to return to his role as
full-time faculty member as the CPST makes this move. Joseph Wyse, Ph.D., a
UK
alumnus who has been working as the CPST managing director and who has 17
years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, has assumed the
position of president. Coldstream
Laboratories will be a subsidiary of Kentucky Technology Inc., UK’s for-profit company that invests
in and operates businesses and real estate such as the Coldstream
Research Campus, and develops and markets UK’s research
discoveries.
We hope to see you in Lexington for the
2007 Pharmaceutical Sciences Postgraduate Conference on April 19-21.
In addition to our keynote speaker, William N. Charman
of Victorian College of Pharmacy in Australia, we will induct our
first two Outstanding Alumni: Kim Brouwer (2006)
and Munir Hussain
(2007). Please join us in April to honor Kim and Munir
as well as see plans for the new Pharmacy building.
Sincerely,
Patrick McNamara, Ph.D.
