Active Learning

This series will describe various active learning strategies that can be used in the classroom, such as "think-pair-share", debates, small group discussion, quick thinks, etc.

Assessment related to Accreditation

This session will provide a primer on assessment including its rationale and relationship to accreditation. Discussion will include a review of various assessment methods that may be used in the classroom.

Classroom Assessment

This session will review quick and easy techniques that a faculty member can use to determine if teaching methods are effective for student learning. Various strategies from Angelo and Cross' textbook Classroom Assessment Techniques will be presented.

Civility in the Classroom

This session provided realistic and practical solutions that pharmacy educators may use to address a growing trend of increased classroom incivilities.

Developing a Teaching Philosophy/ Portfolio

This session will review aspects of preparing a teaching portfolio and a teaching philosophy. Note: a teaching philosophy is a concise, cogent, clear explanation of a teacher's beliefs about his/her own teaching. A teaching portfolio is a compilation of selected information about and evidence gathered from a professor's teaching.

Using Group Learning

This session will focus on using small group learning in the classroom. Discussion will include suggestions on group behavior and peer-evaluation of group members.

Scholarship of Learning (SOT)

The SOT involves professors attempting to answer questions about what is going on with teaching and learning, i.e., how to explain, support and replicate those aspects that enhance the learning. The SOT requires faculty to do research on their own teaching practices, framing their research questions from educational theory and grounding it in evidence from their teaching activities. This session will present a discussion about the SOT and provide examples.

Test Development

This session will present tips on planning, constructing, administering and using test statistics to prepare quizzes, tests and comprehensive examinations. Various test formats will be discussed (e.g., objective, open-ended), and specific faculty concerns will be addressed.

This will be a series of sessions from faculty describing teaching strategies that have been successful for them. Examples include:

What Does Research Say About How Students Learn?

This session will review the results from recent studies on student learning and how to use this information in the classroom.

Writing Learning Objectives and/or Outcome Statements

This session will offer basic guidelines on and examples of how to write objectives and outcome statements.
