Pre-Residency Pathway

Rationale

A post-graduate pharmacy residency is a concentrated experience in which the pharmacist is exposed to a wide variety of patient populations and different avenues of pharmacy practice in order to hone clinical skills and gain a competitive advantage in the job market. The purpose of the Pharmacy Pre-Residency pathway is to introduce students to the concept of residency training and provide a foundation in critical thinking skills and career planning. The Pre-Residency pathway will serve to enhance the student's clinical abilities and increase the student's competitiveness for positions, residency or otherwise, after graduation.

Intended Outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of benefits of the residency training process and the potential role of residency-trained individuals in practice
  • Exhibit a strong foundation and enhanced abilities in direct patient care and problem solving
  • Display competency in identifying clinical issues in specialty populations such as those with a transplant, malignancy, critical illness, or pediatrics
  • Demonstrate a developing proficiency in medical writing and public speaking
  • Be able to prepare a current curriculum vitae
  • Identify a pharmacy mentor/advisor to serve as a model professional

Students who fulfill the elective course requirements and 5 experiential rotations will complete the Pre-Residency pathway.
