What does the neuropsychiatric pharmacist do?
Neuropsychiatric pharmacists specialize in the treatment of neurologic and psychiatric disorders. Practice sites may include inpatient services, outpatient clinics, and long-term care.
Objectives
Students interested in careers in neuropsychiatry pharmacy should:
- Have a basic understanding of neuropharmacology
- Identify basic neuroanatomical structures involved in common disease processes
- Be familiar with symptomatology and presentation of common neuropsychiatric disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, schizophrenia, substance dependence, bipolar disorder, and depression
- Recognize psychosocial aspects of neuropsychiatric disease
- Identify drug-related problems for neuropsychiatric patients and recommend appropriate interventions.
