What does the neuropsychiatric pharmacist do?

Neuropsychiatric pharmacists specialize in the treatment of neurologic and psychiatric disorders. Practice sites may include inpatient services, outpatient clinics, and long-term care.

Objectives

Students interested in careers in neuropsychiatry pharmacy should:

  • Have a basic understanding of neuropharmacology
  • Identify basic neuroanatomical structures involved in common disease processes
  • Be familiar with symptomatology and presentation of common neuropsychiatric disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, schizophrenia, substance dependence, bipolar disorder, and depression
  • Recognize psychosocial aspects of neuropsychiatric disease
  • Identify drug-related problems for neuropsychiatric patients and recommend appropriate interventions.
