Graduate certificate in Gerontology

The Graduate Certificate in Gerontology is an interdisciplinary curriculum offered by the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging. The Certificate is a part of Sanders-Brown's complete range of research and educational programs that prepare both graduate students and practicing professionals from many disciplines to assume key roles in improving the quality of life for older adults and furthering our understanding of the aging process. Its interdisciplinary focus makes it possible for students to tailor their course work to support their own fields of interest. The Graduate Certificate in Gerontology will meet the needs of:

  • Graduate students preparing for careers in public service and program administration related to understanding and meeting the needs of the older population.
  • Graduate degree candidates in the basic and applied sciences who are interested in the study of aging.
  • Candidates for professional degrees in the helping and human services professions who plan to provide specialty services to the elderly.
  • Professionals with an interest in the field of aging who desire further course work in gerontology to enhance their professional development.

The Graduate Certificate in Gerontology requires 15 credit hours in gerontology and the completion of an advanced degree. An individual curriculum plan is developed with the assistance of a faculty adviser or certificate coordinator. To encourage interdisciplinary learning, no more than six credit hours from any one department can be applied to the certificate requirements. All program participants are required to complete:

  • A three-hour multidisciplinary course that provides an overview the aging process and its effects:
    BIO 612 Biology of Aging. (3)
    GRN 612 Biology of Aging. (3)
    OR
    GRN 643 Biomedical Aspects of Aging. (3)
    SW 643 Biomedical Aspects of Aging. (3)
  • A three-hour practicum or research project with a focus on aging.
  • Nine additional credit hours selected from a list of approved courses from either the biomedical or health-services fields or from the social or behavioral sciences (pharmacy students would be required to take:
    GRN 513 Geriatric Pharmacy. (3)
    PHR 813 Geriatric Pharmacy. (3)

Both the number and the proportion of older people in our society is increasing dramatically, and this trend will continue well into the 21st century. A Graduate Certificate in Gerontology will enhance professional opportunities in a field that is assuming ever-growing importance to our society.
