Current Pharm.D. Frequently Asked Questions

May I take elective courses at another university if they are equivalent courses?
You can take pathway electives at any institution, as long as the course is equivalent to one here at UK and approved in any of the pathways listed. Courses taken at another institution do count and it does not matter where they were taken, but you must officially transfer in your credit to UK. Check the website for the Registrar's Office for instructions.

May I take elective courses in the summer semester(s)?
The course could be during the regular school year or during the summer - it makes no difference.

Will any courses that I took prior to enrolling in pharmacy school count toward fulfillment of my elective requirement?
Unfortunately not. All electives have to be done after your enrollment in the College. That is the only way you will receive the proper number of credits for graduation.

May I change my pathway once I have already taken some related courses?
Yes, you are not "locked in" to any pathway.

What should I do if I want to take an elective that is not listed in an approved pathway?
If a course is not in any approved pathway, then you can ask the Office of Academic Affairs for approval - send in the course number, description, and reasons why it would be a good pathway elective according to your career interests and you will get back a note indicating approval/disapproval.

There are some summer classes offered at UK (or another institution) which I believe may be applicable to pharmacy and are of interest to me. How can I find out if they would be acceptable toward my pharmacy elective credits?
If a course is not in any approved pathway, then you can ask the Office of Academic Affairs for approval by submitting the course number, description, and reasons why it would be a good pathway elective according to your career interests. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs will review your request and approve/disapprove it. If you have specific questions, stop by the Academic Affairs Office to discuss them.

Will my grades and credit hours in elective courses be listed on my pharmacy transcript?
Yes.

Are my elective courses covered under my tuition for pharmacy courses?
You do not have to pay for them if you take them at UK and they are taken during any semester in which you are a full-time pharmacy student already enrolled and paying full-time tuition. If you take them at any other time, then you have to pay for them just the way you would when signing up for an extra semester. Obviously if the courses are taken at another university you would have to pay tuition there.

I am interested in pursuing a career in research and would like to take some electives that will prepare me for that. What should I do?
The first thing to do is talk to the Director of Graduate Studies (Dr. Janice Buss) and/or the Associate Dean for Research (Dr. Yokel).  They will give you an idea of the various options available to students interested in research.  As a Pharm.D. student you are eligible to take graduate courses, if you wish, that could apply to both your Pharm.D. program and your Graduate Program.  There is a relatively simple procedure for getting registered into them that begins with filling out a "Graduate Course Enrollment Form" available in one of the slots to the right of the student mailboxes.   Fill out the form, have the course instructor sign the form and turn it in to the Academic Affairs Office.  Any courses you would take to help you with the Ph.D. portion of a Pharm.D./Ph.D. program would count as your pathway electives for the Pharm.D. program.

If a "flexible" pathway is proposed and approved by one student, can other students assume that they can take that same pathway as well?
No, you should get approval for a flexible pathway yourself, even though it is approved for someone else. Approval depends upon an individual student's prior academic record. For example, one student may have a course or degree in their prepharmacy work that would overlap with an elective they proposed, while another student would not. If Academic Affairs approved a particular course for one student to take, then they generally would approve it for another student with a similar academic background.

I am trying to register for course(s) outside the College of Pharmacy, but I get a message stating "Major Restrictions" that prevents me from completing my registration. What should I do?
Contact staff in the COP Office of Academic Affairs--they may be able to do an administrative override and complete your registration--depending upon space availability and satisfactory prerequisites.
