Dr. W. Gary Erwin, Pharmacy Class of 1981, was elected Sr. Vice President at Omnicare, Inc. in Covington, KY. Omnicare is the nation's leading provider of pharmaceutical care for the elderly.
James Wallace, Pharmacy Class of 1980, is the new VP of Sales and New Product Development for AmeriScript. Located in Stow, Ohio, the company also has a sales office in Louisville. AmeriScript is an independently owned and operated national pharmacy network.
David D. Allen, R.Ph., Ph.D., (B.S., 1985; Ph.D., 1993) has been appointed the founding dean of pharmacy and professor of pharmaceutical sciences and professor of physiology and pharmacology at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM) effective January 2006.
Dr. Allen is currently associate dean for curricular affairs and associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (HSC) School of Pharmacy in Amarillo, Texas.
He received his bachelor's degree in pharmacy at UK in 1985 and then worked in community pharmacy for several years before returning to UK to earn his doctorate in pharmaceutical sciences in 1993. In addition, Allen served as an intramural research training award postdoctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.
William Hewlett (UKCOP, 1970) was appointed vice president of pharmacy services for Arcadia Rx, a division of Arcadia Resources located in Southfield, Michigan. Arcadia Resources is a provider of home care and staffing services and mail-order pharmacy services.
Stephen Schondelmeyer, Pharm.D. (UKCOP, 1977), Ph.D., Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Care & Health Systems at the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy, has been named the 2006 recipient of the APhA Research Achievement Award. Dr. Schondelmeyer is a 1977 graduate of the UK College of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.).
Martin A. Mattingly, Class of 1981, was appointed President and CEO of Ambrx, Inc. in San Diego, California. Ambrx is a biopharmaceutical company.
Welton O'Neal, Jr., 1982 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, was name VP of Medical Affairs of Medical Affairs at NitroMed, Inc. in Lexington, Massachusetts. NitroMed is a research-based Pharmaceutical company.
Glenn Kelley, Pharm.D., Class of 2001 (Pharm.D.), has accepted the position of Department Based Educator for the Pharmacy Department at The Medical Center of Central Georgia. He has been with The Medical Center of Central Georgia since his graduation for the UK College of Pharmacy. Glenn is married to Lanier and has two children, Paul and Addision.
Ann Amerson, Class of 1969 (B.S.), Class of 1971 (Pharm.D.), was named the 2005 recipient of the Sarah Bennett Holmes Award. The award program was held March 23, 2005 at the UK Student Center.
The Sarah Bennett Holmes Award is named for the distinguished former Dean of Women at the University of Kentucky, who tirelessly championed the rights of women throughout her career. In her honor, the UK Women's Forum created the Sarah Bennett Holmes Award. The Award is granted annually to women working at the University who promote the growth and well-being of other women at UK and across the Commonwealth. The award brings recognition for efforts that would otherwise go unnoticed through normal channels.
According to her nomination letter: "Ann Amerson, throughout her 36 years at UK, has inspired women as a role model and increased opportunities for those who have followed her. In 1971, she was one of three individuals and the only woman to receive a Pharm.D. degree. She also was the first female to receive the Paul F. Parker Award. As a full professor in the College of Pharmacy, she was a co-investigator of a study to introduce health care professional students to women's health issues. Countless students, residents, staff and faculty have been blessed by Ann Amerson's tireless dedication to mentor and advise them.
The Society of Critical Care Medicine has inducted Jimmi Hatton, Class of 1983 (B.S.), Class of 1984 (Pharm.D.), associate professor in the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, as a Fellow in the American College of Critical Care Medicine (ACCM). The ACCM is part of the Society of Critical Care Medicine with the mission of fostering the highest goals of multiprofessional critical care medicine.
Hatton, who holds a joint appointment as associate professor of surgery in the Division of Neurosurgery in the UK College of Medicine, received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from UK in 1984 and completed a clinical pharmacy residency in 1986.
ACCM confers Fellowship status to members of SCCM who have demonstrated dedication to the collaborative practice model of critical care; active participation in the development of programs or systems related to the critical care; educational contributions to health care professionals; contributed to scientific literature in the area of critical care; and participated actively in leadership positions of professional organizations devoted to collaborative critical care practice.
Holly Divine, Pharm.D., CGP, CDE,, assistant professor at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, has been named the Bluegrass Pharmacists Association's (BPhA) 2004 Pharmacist of the Year.
The award is given annually to a pharmacist member of the association who has exemplified the professional aspects of pharmacy through commitment to patient care.
Divine, a native of Dawson Springs, Ky., earned her Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the UK College of Pharmacy. In addition, she has certification in geriatric pharmacy (CGP) and is a certified diabetes educator (CDE).
She currently serves as a clinical pharmacist in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science in the Pharmacy REACH (Raising Energy, Awareness and Campus Health) Program working with UK Health Plan members for diabetes education and management. She is also the director of the Community Pharmacy Residency Program working with American Pharmacy Services Corporation (APSC) and Kroger Pharmacy. Her teaching responsibilities include coordinating the geriatrics and community pharmacy management elective courses.
She also is the recent recipient of the 2004 Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award from the Kentucky Pharmacists Association
Joseph T. DiPiro, Pharm.D., a 1981 graduate of the UK College of Pharmacy and a former resident at the UK Chandler Medical Center, has been named Executive Dean of the integrated Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)/University of South Carolina (USC) pharmacy education program. Dr. DiPiro is currently assistant dean of the University of Georgia (UGA) College of Pharmacy. He also serves as assistant dean for pharmacy programs and clinical professor of surgery at the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine.
