INTERN RETREAT
Every year in early fall, just in time for the changing color of the leaves, our interns pack up for a couple of days away. They travel to Natural Bridge State Park, located in the Red River Gourge about an hour and a half outside of Lexington. They spend the first day relaxing and hanging out--or hiking one of the many beautiful trails to the Natural Bridge itself. Evening activities include food, games and fun.
The second day of the retreat is centered on informal discussions led by attendings. Topics may include how to deliver bad news, balancing residency and your personal life and conflict resolution.
While the interns are away, the upper level residents gladly “watch after the fort” to ensure that all interns can be in attendance with no other responsibility other than to have fun and bond with their classmates.
The interns come away from the retreat feeling renewed and refreshed and glad to have gotten to know their fellow interns just a little bit better.
UPPER LEVEL RETREAT
Held in Berea, Kentucky at the renowned and stately Boone Tavern, the Upper Level Retreat provides residents with the opportunity to reflect on their intern year and to prepare for the future. Career advice, networking, planning and so much more happens at this brief but crucial meeting of residency upper levels. This retreat is sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics and held jointly with PGY-2's from the University of Louisville.
SENIOR BOARD REVIEW RETREAT
While excellent training in clinical care is our primary goal, we recognize the importance of succeeding on the Pediatric Boards as well. For our senior educational retreat, we send our residents to the Southeast Pediatric Board Review Course at Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. This retreat provides an in-depth review over three days and a welcome opportunity for socializing with your classmates before the graduation festivities begin. |
