PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT POST-GRADUATE RESIDENCY IN NEONATOLOGY
Newborn Nursery
The PA resident will examine the newborn infants and discuss the findings with the attending physician. The PA resident will attend the delivery of infants and participate in Neonatal Resuscitation when required. The resident will participate in educational sessions provided by the newborn nursery physicians.
Upon graduation the PA resident will:
- Be familiar with the safe handling of newborn infants during the examination process
- Be able to independently examine healthy newborn infants
- Be able to identify aspects of the normal physical exam of a newborn infant including (but not limited to) gestational age determination, innocent versus pathologic cardiac murmurs, appropriate weight gain and identification of physiologic jaundice
- Be able to identify conditions that require admission to the NICU including respiratory distress, pathologic heart conditions, gastro-intestinal obstruction, etc
- Be familiar with all aspects of Neonatal Resuscitation and be able to perform all procedures that may be required for stabilization and transfer.
