Neuropathology Fellowship

DESCRIPTION

A two-year fellowship in surgical pathology is offered at the University of Kentucky, Chandler Medical Center. A high proportion of surgical neuropathological accessions are related to the diagnosis and staging of neoplasms but there are many dementia autopsies linked to the University of Kentucky Alzheimer's Disease Center. Approximately one month of vacation/travel is included. Critically important, a six-month research block is scheduled following the clinical 18 month segment at the beginning of the fellowship.

REQUIREMENTS

The fellowship is open to individuals who are board eligible or certified in anatomic pathology or anatomic and clinical pathology.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The fellow is one of the persons responsible for helping to instruct junior residents in neuropathology. The fellow will also sign out cases on a schedule commensurate with their abilities. Generally this will constitute signing out cases for approximately 45 min/day with an attending neuropathologist (of which there are currently 3 on the service

The fellow will also be responsible for actively participating in Tumor Board and Slide Conference, and also braincutting, a neurology clinical-pathological conference, and select additional inter-service activities and conferences.

REQUIRED SCHOLARLY WORK

The neuropathology fellow is expected to participate in at least one project designed to culminate in, work suitable for publication in a peer reviewed journal and/or presentation at a national meeting. Such projects will be carried out in collaboration with members of the pathology faculty or, after approval by the Director of Surgical Pathology, with other faculty members from the College of Medicine or the University.
