Research projects in the microbiology laboratory focus on the detection of sexually transmitted diseases by serologic, molecular and culture techniques. STDs of particular interest are the Herpes Simplex viruses, Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrheae, Haemophilus ducreyi, and Group B beta-hemolytic streptococcus. Other laboratory-based research includes the use of antibiograms and microbial cell wall fatty acid composition in delineating relatedness of organisms spread in the hospital setting. The laboratory also participates extensively in the comparison and validation of various testing modalities used in Clinical Microbiology. Microbiology is extensively involved in collecting and analyzing specimens or isolates for many IRB approved projects hospital-wide.
