SPORTS MEDICINE FELLOWSHIP

The Section of Sports Medicine, under the leadership of Darren L. Johnson, M.D., was established in 1987. A fitness center in direct contiguity with the sports clinic, complete with weight machines, free weights, treadmills, rowers, exercise bikes, and other cardiovascular and strength training equipment, coordinates the treatment and rehabilitation programs. Sports medicine services are provided for Olympic, professional, varsity, and recreational athletes. The University of Kentucky, Section of Sports Medicine is responsible for the medical care of all UK varsity athletes and for all Fayette County public school athletes. The number of high school, college and professional teams for which the Sports Medicine provides Orthopaedic services continues to grow. Research focus includes allograft use in knee surgery, graft fixation, shoulder mechanics and proprioception. Sports Medicine has three accredited fellowships at the PGY- 6 level.
