Kentucky TeleCare

Rob Sprang, MBA, Director of the Kentucky TeleCare Network, and Project Manager of the Kentucky TeleHealth Network leads a statewide initiative of videoconference networks in healthcare facilities across the Commonwealth. Telemedicine is the use of communication technologies to extend healthcare resources to every Kentuckian no matter where they live. The shortage of healthcare professionals is especially acute in rural Kentucky, and telehealth connects patients to healthcare specialists that normally are not available in their local community. The interconnected telehealth networks include Kentucky’s three medical schools, hospitals, clinics, public health departments, community mental health centers, state psychiatric hospitals, public school clinics and many other healthcare facilities.

The Kentucky TeleCare Network uses videoconference technology and medical devices, such as specialty cameras and electronic stethoscopes to bring healthcare services normally only available in a University Medical Center to community healthcare facilities anywhere in the state. Kentucky TeleCare hosts nearly 20 medical specialty services and provided over 30,000 clinical tele-encounters to rural communities and correctional facilities. Educational programming has reached across the world, including broadcasted tele-surgeries to conferences in Europe and Africa and weekly conferences to India, Jordan and Brazil. The network also facilitates clinical research programs that reach young children as well as aging adults.

As a part of the UK College of Medicine, Kentucky TeleCare assumes a leadership role in addressing the healthcare needs of the commonwealth and to be preeminent among medical schools in selected areas of education, research and service.
