2013 BARNSTABLE BROWN OBESITY & DIABETES RESEARCH DAY
MONDAY, MAY 13
Funding sources for Barnstable Brown Obesity and Diabetes Research Day
The concept for an annual, regional symposium
dedicated to highlighting research on the relationship between obesity
and diabetes grew out of the complementary research of centers and
departments within the College of Medicine that are funded in part by
the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and/or private funding.
The following NIH-supported grants, departments or centers of
research and training contributed to the support and development of the Barnstable Brown
Obesity and Diabetes Research Day.
NIH Grants
The Center of Research
in Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease (5P20RR021954-05) and the
National Institute of General Medical Sciences (8 P20 GM103527-05) from
the National Institutes of Health was created at the University of Kentucky to identify mechanisms linking the
epidemic of obesity to the high incidence of cardiovascular diseases in
the obese population. This research focus is used as a platform to
develop promising junior investigators who serve as principal
investigators on research projects that address timely and significant
questions related to obesity and cardiovascular disease. This Center is
supported by a five-year award from the
NIH National Center for Research
Resources (NCRR), through the
Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence
(COBRE) program. As part of
the mentoring activities for supported investigators of the Center, and
to promote and/or facilitate relevant research, the Barnstable Brown Obesity and Diabetes
Research Day will include presentations by supported researchers within
the program. In addition,
research cores of the Center will be highlighted to facilitate and/or
expand research capabilities by participating investigators in the areas
of obesity and diabetes.
The
Nutrition and Oxidative Stress Training Grant
NIH 2T32DK007778) housed in the Graduate Center for
Nutritional Sciences is in its 11th year of funding from the National Institutes of
Health Diabetes and Digestive Disease Institute. This training program, supporting predoctoral trainees, seeks to
prepare biomedical scientists for academic careers in research focused
on nutrition and oxidative stress. Within the training program, an area of emphasis addresses
research on the development, prevention or treatment of obesity and
diabetes. Trainees within this
program will participate in the Barnstable Brown Obesity and Diabetes Research Day as
session chairs, and through poster/podium presentations.
A major purpose will be to allow trainees to interact with
visiting and local scientists and obtain constructive feedback enhancing
their research.
Centers and Departments
The
Barnstable Brown Kentucky Diabetes & Obesity Center at the
University of Kentucky coordinates efforts across the many diverse
academic and scientific units engaged in diabetes and obesity research
and clinical care. The Center’s focus includes the causes of diabetes,
diabetes treatments and clinical care of diabetes complications, public
health implications of and potential strategies to combat diabetes and
obesity. The Barnstable Brown family has made the Center the sole
beneficiary of proceeds from the Barnstable Brown Gala held prior to the
Kentucky Derby. The commitment of proceeds from the Gala has greatly
facilitated research and clinical care related to obesity and diabetes.
Investigators of the Center will participate in all aspects of
the Barnstable Brown Obesity and Diabetes Research Day.
The
Department of Internal
Medicine at the University of Kentucky houses many divisions including the Divisions of
Endocrinology and
Gastroenterology, essential to patient care and
important in research targeted at prevention and/or treatment of obesity
and diabetes. Physicians and
basic scientists of the Department will participate in all aspects of
the Barnstable Brown Obesity and Diabetes Research Day, and will be a valuable resource
for participating investigators to translate research findings towards
improved patient care.
The Graduate
Center for Nutritional Sciences at the University of Kentucky
focuses on nutrition and its impact on chronic diseases, with an
emphasis on obesity and diabetes. The Center offers masters and doctoral
degrees in nutritional sciences, and also contributes to medical
education in nutrition. The
Center was recently rated as one of six programs at the university
ranked in the top 25% of all nutrition doctoral programs by the National
Research Council. The
Center's trainees
and investigators will participate in all aspects of the Barnstable Brown
Obesity and Diabetes Research Day.
