E. Dale Abel, M.D., Ph.D.
Title: "Diabetes and heart failure – connections with insulin"
AbelDr. E. Dale Abel
was recently appointed as the Director of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center at the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine University of Iowa, where he is also the Director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism and Director of the Interdisciplinary Clinical Program in Diabetes. Dr. Abel is a Professor of Medicine and Biochemistry and holds the John B Stokes III Chair in Diabetes Research. Prior to moving to the University of Iowa, Dr. Abel was the Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes at the University of Utah where he held the H.A. and Edna Benning, Presidential Endowed Chair in Diabetes and Endocrinology. Dr. Abel was recruited to the University of Utah in 2000 from the faculty of Harvard Medical School. While at Harvard, he served as co-director of the Endocrinology Fellowship Program at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Dr. Abel received his M.D. with Distinction from the University of the West Indies. He then attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, where he obtained his D. Phil in the Nuffield Department of Medicine. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. Dr. Abel’s research is focused on elucidating the mechanisms that are responsible for cardiac dysfunction in obesity, diabetes and insulin resistant states. His studies have elucidated mechanisms that are responsible for mitochondrial dysfunction that characterizes the heart in insulin resistant states and has pioneered studies of insulin action in the heart. Dr. Abel has published > 140 manuscripts in high impact Journals such as Nature, Circulation, Circulation Research, Diabetes, Cell Metabolism and the Journal of Clinical Investigation. Dr. Abel is the recipient of the Gerald Aurbach Award of the Endocrine Society for Research achievement. He has been elected to membership in the American Association of Physicians (AAP) and the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI). He is a member of the Council of the Endocrine Society and the Board of Directors of Keystone Symposia. He serves as Chair of the Board of Scientific Counselors of the NIDDK and is immediate past-chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation.

Ananda Basu, MBBS, M.D.
Title: "Artificial endocrine pancreas for Type 1 diabetes: from bench to bedside"

Ananda BasuDr. Ananda Basu is Professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, Metabolism, Nutrition, Department of Internal Medicine, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He earned his doctor of medicine degree from Jawaharlal Institute of Post Medical Education, Pondicherry University in 1986. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the Royal College of Physicians. Dr. Basu's research is currently directed at developing physiological models to inform, fine tune and eventually personalize an effective closed-loop control artificial pancreas system for patients with type 1 diabetes using an insulin pump and glucose sensor technologies. Dr. Basu's other research interest includes understanding the mechanism(s) by which diabetes affects heart function. Collaborating with Sharon L. Mulvagh, M.D., in the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases, he is investigating the effects of high blood glucose on coronary circulation and exploring the underlying mechanisms involved in order to design treatment strategies to mitigate the effects of diabetes on heart disease.


Jennifer S. Pollock, Ph.D.
Title: "Endothelin, Nitric Oxide, and Diabetic Nephropathy: Novel therapeutic strategies"

Dr. Jennifer S. Pollock is an Endowed Scholar and Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She earned her Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received post-doctoral training under the tutelage of Dr. Ferid Murad, 1998 Nobel Laureate in Physiology and Medicine. Subsequent to her post-doctoral training, she worked as a Drug Discovery Scientist at Abbott Laboratories for over 7 years then moving to the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Regents University in Augusta where she built her academic career for 18 years and was the Weiss Professor and Director of the MD/PhD program. Dr. Pollock relocated to UAB in 2014 to co-direct a newly organized section within the Divisions of Nephrology and Cardiology under the Department of Medicine, Cardio-Renal Physiology & Medicine. Dr. Pollock also serves as the Associate Director of the Center for Free Radical Biology and is a member of the steering committee for the MSTP training grant and the MD/PhD program. Dr. Pollock’s research focuses on the vascular and renal mechanisms of hypertension, diabetes, and recently sickle cell anemia focusing on the role of nitric oxide and vasoactive factors in the relationship of acute and chronic stress on the vasculature, renal function, and immune responses. Dr. Pollock’s research group is currently supported by two Program Project Grants and a U01 collaborative grant from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Pollock serves as a member of two AHA study sections and as an ad-hoc reviewer for NIH. Dr. Pollock has authored over 160 peer-reviewed publications and reviews. During her career, Dr. Pollock has mentored and trained over 60 undergraduate students, medical students, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, clinical fellows, and junior faculty members.
