Welcome to the University of Kentucky
The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship was approved in November
2007 for 4 years.
The fellowship is purposely designed to be well balanced and
structured while maintaining flexibility to meet the individual
interests and long term objectives of the Fellow.
Research
A full 50% of fellowship time or 18 months is dedicated to
research. Specific metrics with suggested timelines have been
developed in order for the fellow to successfully complete the
research project and thesis. Fellows will be expected to
participate in UK Clinical Research Organization (CRO) sponsored
workshops, lectures and online training courses for IRB, grant
writing, and bioethics. Fellows will be encouraged to complete a
Masters in Clinical Science through the College of Medicine.
Several small internal grants are available to support a
fellow’s research project. Each fellow will have a formal
research mentor and a thesis committee that is coordinated and
meeting regularly by the end of the first year.
Clinical
Clinical time is appropriately divided between ultrasound
/prenatal diagnosis (Fetal medicine) and labor and
delivery/antepartum service and outpatient care (Maternal
medicine). Clinical time will also be spent with Pediatric
Cardiology (Echo lab) and in the Cytogenetics laboratory.
Elective rotations are available in Infectious Disease/HIV
Clinic, Critical Care, and the Neonatal Intensive Care. Fellows
will have 3-4 units of independent night call monthly in Labor
and Delivery.
Education
Conference time for fellows occurs on Friday afternoon
throughout all three years. Fellows will also be expected to
participate and assume a leadership role in the ongoing monthly
MFM/Neonatal Conference.
